If you are like me, you probably believe that young players enjoy the game most when they are scoring goals. The youth soccer drills in practice sessions should therefore include lots of opportunities for them to practice scoring.
Let them take advantage of all opportunities during small sided games, full field scrimmages, and shooting drills. It’s better to keep diverging the process in kids soccer drills, when performing small sided games and full field scrimmages.
You also have the choice to add games that can be played without a goalkeeper or where a goalie’s movement can be restricted within given boundaries. The probability of players scoring goals is also increased by adding more goals or enlarging the ones that are already being used.
When young players improve in their shooting technique and the tactical knowledge about the shooting techniques, the chances of goal production are increased manifold. Similar to passing skills, players should be trained in shooting techniques as well at the beginner’s stage. And then these can be practiced more seriously at any time during the later stages of player’s growth.
In youth soccer practice, using drills to advance shooting skills is the most efficient method. With a view to score goals efficiently, players should perform shooting drills and develop their shooting skills. However, make sure that your player’s develop their shooting skills gradually.
Different forms of youth soccer drills can be designed with a view to perk up the shooting skills of players by including the following strings in them;
1. Stationery ball shot by a stationery player.
2. A moving player shooting a still ball.
3. Moving ball being shot by a stationery player.
4. A moving player being shot by a moving player.
It should be an imperative part of youth soccer coaching to help the players hit the ball effectively while shooting. Most players have the habit of taking shots from a close range and the inside of their feet. This has the effect of enhancing the shooting accuracy.
Where the situation is such that strength is required to hit the ball, teach the players to use the instep of their foot to strike the ball. While their toes should point downwards, the ankles should be locked.
The elevation of the shoot is affected by the placement of the non-kicking foot. Instruct the players to place their non-kicking foot slightly away from the ball. This will keep the shot low. Try to keep the players focused on striking the ball. You can remove all the distracting equipment such as players and balls so that they focus better.
As the players keep progressing on their shooting skills, raise the bar so that their growth continues. As an example, when they show improvement with their shooting, make them work with the balls at increased speed and levels.
Now, you must bear in mind to include a lot of youth soccer drills pertaining to shooting in your sessions.
